Western Victoria is an important dairying region.

  • About 1,700 dairy farmers produce two billion litres of milk annually. This represents more than 30% of Victoria’s production and 22% of national milk output.
  • The dairy industry directly employs almost 6,000 people in Western Victoria, in both farming and processing. There are eight dairy factories operating in the region, collecting and processing milk.
  • Dairy companies manufacturing product in the region include Fonterra, Murray Goulburn and Warrnambool Cheese & Butter factory. A number of other dairy companies have suppliers in the region.
  • The estimated value of farmgate production in the region in 2007/08 is more than $760 million.
